Q. What is the ChemoFx® Assay?
A. It is a laboratory test that provides information about how cancer cells respond to different anti-cancer drugs in the laboratory. This test is performed in Precision Therapeutics' laboratories.
Q. Why is the ChemoFx® Assay test important?
A. Each cancer patient is unique. The ChemoFx® Assay provides valuable information that can assist in making difficult cancer treatment decisions, allowing personalized cancer therapy. The ChemoFx® Assay determines the response of a patient's tumor to anti-cancer agents enabling the physician to individualize treatment. The ChemoFx® Assay also identifies those anti-cancer agents which are ineffective against an individual tumor thereby helping the physician to avoid unnecessary toxic treatment and potential side effects to the patient.
Q. How is the ChemoFx® Assay done?
A. A portion of the cancer cells removed during your procedure or surgery were sent to Precision Therapeutics. The cancer cells received are grown in our laboratory and treated with anticancer drugs selected by your doctor. After treatment to the cancer cells, a member of the laboratory scientific staff determines the relative amount of cancer cell response to each drug your doctor selected. A final report is prepared and sent to your doctor.
Q. What are the benefits of the Chemo Fx® Assay?
A. The ChemoFx® assay provides the following benefits:
• The ChemoFx® assay assists the physician as he/she determines the most appropriate
treatment course for patients with a cancer diagnosis, creating a personal treatment,
based on the cells' response rate and in consideration of your current health condition and
other medical issues you may have.
• Drugs tested are individually physician selected and based on your personal
medical history.
• Direct insurance billing to your insurance company.
• Ability to test cells from solid tumors, ascites fluid, pleural effusions or core biopsies.
Q. Who pays for the test?
A. The ChemoFx Assay is covered by Medicare Part B and has been reimbursed by over 400 commercial insurance companies. Precision will provide you with information that may help you determine the likelihood of your plan providing payment.
Precision will accept assignment from your commercial health plan (and will not balance bill you) provided that you complete the Assignment of Benefits/Appointment of Authorized Representative form. Additionally, Precision will submit claims on your behalf to your insurance company. Patients with commercial insurance will be responsible for applicable co-payments, deductibles and co-insurance as required by their policies.
