Ideal Specimen Collection

1. Fresh tumor specimens submitted for evaluation should be as representative as possible of the excised lesion. Ideally, the submitted specimen should be obtained from an area adjacent to the specimen submitted for histology. There should, however, never be a compromise of the quality and quantity of specimens submitted for pathology.

2. The ideal mass for submission of a solid tumor should range from 35mg to 1 gram. Ideal fluid specimens should be between 100cc to 500cc and not spun down.

3. Specimens must be fresh, not frozen, and not exposed to formalin or fixatives.

4. Ideally, tissue should be transferred to the Precision collection bottle directly in the operating room immediately following tumor excision. If this is not possible, the specimen should be placed in a sterile bottle with sufficient sterile 0.9% NaCI to keep the specimen moist. The specimen may be removed from the operating room and subsequently transferred to Precision's collection bottle. This transfer should be done using a sterile technique in a biomaterial processing hood or other sterile area.

5. The specimen should be as free as possible from adherent normal tissue and any gross necrotic or fibrotic tissue.

6. Specimens must be handled quickly so that they are placed into the collection transport media as soon as possible after extraction.

7. Document the patient name and medical record or social security number on the collection bottle label or affix a pre-printed patient label form your facility.

8. If submitting more than one specimen from the same patient (e.g., primary lesion and a metastatic lesion), please take the following steps:

  1. Place each specimen in a separate collection bottle
  2. Include separate Tumor Transport Requisitions for each specimen
  3. Only one signed Assignment of Benefits/Authorization of Representative per patient is required for multiple specimens
